![]() Kids and adults are also beginning to bring out bicycles, skateboards and motorcycles for those first rides of the year and by the looks of the smiles on their faces they obviously are having a good time doing it. Something else soon to “pop up” in downtown Manistee will be the outdoor dining locations as nothing brightens up the area more than people dining, laughing and having a good time in front of those restaurants. It’s the sounds of spring and Manistee County coming to life and being reborn for another year. ![]() Pass any school athletic field these days and the odds are you will hear the spirited sounds of baseball, softball, soccer, track and tennis teams in full action. Even the sound of a lawn mower running is preferable to those of a snow blower in this time of transition. There also are the many sounds of spring adding to the overall beauty like all the songbirds that have returned to the area and greet us in the morning chirping away. The entire county is coming back to life after several months of hibernation. Instead of the dull ice covered view you get greeted with a beautiful, soothing twinkle when the spring sunshine is glistening on the water.Īnother sign of new life is the many cottages, condos and summer homes filling the Manistee County area suddenly have cars parked in front and people out and about in front of them. You also see other signs throughout the county when you pass Canfield, Portage, Manistee and Bear lakes. However, people have spring fever and watching the freighters come and go is a part of it. What made it even more amazing was how many people turned out to watch since it was only 36 degrees outside at the time. There were people all ages and backgrounds including this old man who was just happy to see another sign of a Manistee spring tradition being reborn for another season. It was obvious people were chomping at the bit to watch a freighter pass through the Manistee River Channel after months of seeing none and them came out by the dozens.Īs soon as the bridges went up, the Riverwalk and every open space along on the channel to the lighthouse was filled with hundreds of people. Barker left the Manistee harbor that gave a good indication of spring shipping season returning to the area. There even was an occurrence nearly two weeks ago on Good Friday evening when the freighter Mark W. Seeing many small boats out fishing in the lakes adds to the feeling as well. You even get the sense of it at the beaches where snow fences have begun to come down and the drifts they helped formed being leveled out to a more summer like appearance. ![]() It’s just a cleaner appearance to the whole community.Ĭheck with me again in late July after cutting the grass many times and my opinion might be a little different, but for now it is so great to see a new luster on everything. Many of my neighbors have joined me in to put out lawn bags and grass filled with twigs and debris from winter so the lawns are starting to return to their green luster with each rain shower. Don’t remember what I paid for those bulbs, but they sure were worth it. If you want to talk about a colorful tradition this time of year blooming now right in my own backyard it is the same batch of crocuses, daffodils and tulips that have been showing up for more than a quarter of a century. We even took a family photo in front of the boat. But no, I remember having a terrific time and listening intently to what the tour guide had to say. Before then, I was too busy playing Pokémon on my Gameboy. I had been on previous boat tours before, but I was finally old enough to really appreciate it. A Boat Trip in KingstonĪnother fun memory I had regarding ferry rides was this one time I took a boat tour in Kingston with my parents while I was in high school. My cousin and I stayed up on the bow of the ship, pretending we were in Pirates of the Caribbean. We were making ourselves laugh, along with the captain watching our silly shenanigans. There was one year when a vicious thunderstorm occurred while we were sailing. There would be food and games, and we would all catch up while enjoying the gorgeous scenery. on the HudsonĪ family tradition of ours used to be that one of my dad's cousins would rent a boat, and we would have a family reunion while sailing up and down the Hudson. Taking a ferry ride is like taking a cruise like day camp is to sleep-away camp. You can even have dinner on a ferry while being serenaded by music. Perhaps you want to take a boat ride and sightsee! Some ferry rides will have a guided tour and tell you about the history and geography of the area you are visiting.
